Metal-Ceramic Porcelain

Metal-ceramic porcelain, used in porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) restorations, is a layering ceramic formulated to bond to a cast or milled metal substructure through a thin opaque layer that masks the metal color before dentin and enamel layers are built up for esthetics. This system combines the strength and predictable fit of a metal coping with tooth-like esthetics, making it a long-established, cost-effective option for crowns and bridges, particularly in posterior or high-load situations. Metal-ceramic porcelain requires a firing schedule and thermal expansion compatible with the specific alloy used, to prevent chipping or delamination.
